About our Church

History

First Reformed has been a witness for Christ in the city of Pittsburgh for over 200 years. Our congregation began downtown in 1800, relocated for a season to Homewood, and ultimately settled in Penn Hills in 1958. By God’s grace, the hallmark of our church has been its longstanding commitment to biblical teaching. You can learn more of our history here.

Beliefs

FRPC is a church in the Presbyterian Church in America. We are biblical, evangelical, presbyterian, and confessional. We believe the Bible to be the inerrant and infallible word of God. We believe that salvation comes by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone to the glory of God alone. Our mission at FRPC is to glorify God together by spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, gathering and perfecting the saints, through worship, discipleship, missions, and fellowship as a biblical and prayerful congregation in Penn Hills.

What You Can Expect

When do we meet? We have morning worship at 10:15 am and an evening service at 5:30 pm every Sunday.

What is the service like? Our services are about an hour and fifteen minutes long. The style is fairly liturgical and we seek to create an atmosphere of reverent joy. In this time, we sing together, profess our faith together, confess our sins together, hear the word together and enjoy the sacraments together. Upon arrival, you will receive a bulletin that will guide you through the service. Our bulletins are found here.

What is your music like? As far as songs: we sing Psalms and hymns (old and new) from a variety of sources such as the Trinity Hymnal, RUF, Getty Music and many others. We are always learning new songs!

How often do you celebrate the Lord’s Supper? Weekly.

What do people wear? Some people dress casually (jeans), while others are more formal (suit). Most are somewhere in between.

Is there nursery? Yes. We have nursery during our morning services for those under the age of four. You can either follow the signs or ask someone to help you find the right room.

Is there Sunday school? Yes. Sunday school is from 9:00-10:00 am from September to May. There is no Sunday school in the summer months. During the Sunday school hour, there are usually two adult classes going on. One is typically taught by a pastor in the fellowship hall and the other is in another room, taught by an elder. There are also Sunday school classes for all ages from high school all the way down to 2’s and 3’s. Nursery is provided during this hour for those under two.

Where should I park? There are a few spots in the front of the church, but most people park in the back and enter through the rear doors. You will find the sanctuary at the top of the stairs.
