My Good Shepherd -- New Song for Sunday

Right before the lockdown began, we were learning this song during the evening service. We will be singing it together on Sunday, so Jill and I did a quick recording to aide in our singing. Also, below is a lead sheet with chords for those who are interested.

Here’s a little background on the song:

I had the privilege to visit the Scipiones during George’s time in hospice. Eileen shared with me a book that contained George’s sermons from the early 70’s. At the end of a number of his sermons were poems or hymns he had written based on his sermon text. My eye was drawn to the hymn based on John 10, the Good Shepherd. I asked if I could take it with me and see if I could add some music to it. I made no promises! Sometimes these things take a while or never pan out. However, the melody and the added chorus came together rather quickly and I was able to share it with Eileen a few days later, before George’s memorial service, where I was honored to share it with those in attendance.

The words are wonderful, so comforting and encouraging. They put before us the person and work of our Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ. George ministered to many of us at FRPC during his time with us and he continues to minister to us through this hymn he left behind, which is almost 50 years in the making! May the Lord use it to bless us in our time in worship on Sunday.

Here is the lead sheet.
